Tris, Lilacs, Trindles & Merle: What You're Really Paying For
Color is the first thing most buyers fall in love with and the last thing they understand. That's backwards — because color in the American Bully is straightforward genetics, and understanding it protects your wallet and your future dog. Here's the honest version, from a kennel that specializes in tri and tri-carrier bloodlines.
What Makes a "Tri"?
A tri-color bully shows three distinct colors: a base color, white markings, and tan points — those copper accents above the eyes, on the cheeks, chest, and legs. The tan points come from a specific gene (the tan-point allele at the agouti locus). Both parents must carry it for a puppy to express it, which is exactly why tris are less common and priced accordingly. A dog can carry tri without showing it — that's what "tri carrier" means, and it's why pairing carriers correctly is a skill.
The Base Colors: Black, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac
The base color underneath the tri pattern is what makes a black tri versus a blue tri versus a lilac tri. Two dilution genes do the work:

Trindle: Tri With a Twist
A trindle is a tri whose tan points carry brindle striping inside them — tiger-striped copper instead of solid copper. It requires the brindle gene layered on top of tri genetics, making it a genuinely uncommon combination and a favorite for owners who want something nobody else at the dog park has.
Merle: Beautiful, and Worth Asking Questions About
Merle produces the marbled, patchwork coat that stops traffic — and it deserves a straight conversation. Merle is a dominant pattern gene, and one copy in a healthy, well-bred dog is simply a coat pattern. The danger is double merle: breeding two merle dogs together, which gives each puppy a 25% chance of inheriting two copies — strongly associated with deafness and serious eye defects. Ethical breeders never pair merle to merle, period. If you're shopping merle anywhere, ask directly: "Is either parent's merle status DNA-confirmed, and have you ever bred merle to merle?" A good breeder will love that you asked. What Should Color Cost?
Premiums exist because rarity is real — producing a lilac tri takes generations of deliberate carrier pairing. But here's the rule we tell every buyer: color should be the tiebreaker, never the foundation. A lilac tri with a weak front and shaky temperament is an expensive mistake. A correct, healthy, sweet-natured black tri is a treasure. Pay premiums for rare color on top of health, structure, and temperament — never instead of them.
