Breeding to an Outside Stud: Timing, AI & Contracts
A stud fee is one of the best or worst investments a breeding program makes, and the difference usually isn't the stud — it's the timing, preparation, and paperwork around the breeding. Here's how we walk every stud client through it at Lakeside, whether they're breeding to Empire, The Judge, or anyone else's dog.
Timing Is Everything: Progesterone Testing
The single biggest cause of missed litters is breeding on the wrong days. Counting days from the start of heat is folklore — females vary enormously. Progesterone testing is how modern programs do it: a blood draw at your vet, repeated every day or two once levels start moving, to pinpoint ovulation. The working framework: baseline progesterone rises to roughly 2.0 ng/mL at the LH surge, ovulation follows around 5 ng/mL, and the prime fertile window sits about two to three days after ovulation, as levels climb through the teens.
Two practical notes from our whelping calendar. First, start testing earlier than feels necessary — day 5 or 6 of the heat — because catching the rise matters more than any single number. Second, know your machine: in-clinic analyzers and reference labs can read differently on the same sample, so track the trend on one system instead of mixing numbers from different machines.
Fresh, Chilled, or Frozen?

For insemination itself: standard AI works well with fresh and good chilled semen; TCI (transcervical insemination) places semen directly in the uterus without surgery and has become the go-to for chilled and frozen breedings at good repro clinics. What a Fair Stud Contract Covers
Never breed on a handshake — a fair contract protects both sides. Ours (and any good one) spells out: the fee and when it's due; what counts as a completed breeding (number of ties or AI attempts); the rebreed policy — if no pregnancy is confirmed, you get a return service on the female's next cycle; proof requirements (ultrasound confirmation timeline); health requirements both directions — yes, the stud owner should show you testing too, and we provide Embark results on our studs before breeding, every time; and pick arrangements if the fee involves a puppy back instead of cash.
One thing we require that some skip: approved females only. A responsible stud owner asks about your female's health testing, structure, and temperament — because his name goes on that pedigree too. If a stud owner will breed to anything with a heartbeat and a fee, that tells you what the signature is worth.
Preparing Your Female
Ninety days out: health testing done, vaccines current, on heartworm prevention, in lean athletic condition — overweight females conceive and whelp worse, full stop. Thirty days out: brucellosis test (most stud contracts require it; ours does), and confirm your repro vet's availability so you're not hunting for a TCI appointment mid-cycle. Day one of heat: notify the stud owner immediately and book your first progesterone draw. The clients who plan like this are the ones posting litter announcements nine weeks later.
Budget the whole breeding, not just the stud fee: progesterone panels, shipping and extender for chilled, the AI or TCI procedure, and ultrasound confirmation.
